《綜合英語教程》屬上海外國語大學(xué)學(xué)科辦教材編寫項(xiàng)目。國內(nèi)成人英語學(xué)歷教育發(fā)展至今鮮有成套的有針對性的系列教程，本教程的出版可以說是開創(chuàng)了先例，有著積極的重大意義。本套教程有以下的特點(diǎn)：第一，不同于普通高校英語專業(yè)教材，在教材設(shè)計(jì)、內(nèi)容選擇、語言描述等方面充分考慮了在職成人外語學(xué)生的特點(diǎn)；第二，使用者為已經(jīng)具有英語專業(yè)專科的基礎(chǔ)，旨在獲得本科學(xué)歷和學(xué)位的成人學(xué)生，但同時(shí)也兼顧具有相應(yīng)英語水平的非英語專業(yè)的成人學(xué)生；第三，在選擇課文和教學(xué)內(nèi)容上，旨在兼顧趣味性、知識(shí)性和語言難度的結(jié)合；第四，參加編寫人員都是從事十年以上成人英語教學(xué)和研究的專職教授、副教授，他們的豐富學(xué)識(shí)和教學(xué)經(jīng)歷可以確保本系列教程的質(zhì)量及其科學(xué)性。
