Let’s Make Things Better
TAO Jian
In the spring of 2013, Journal of University of International Relations completed its peaceful metamorphosis, as do many things growing in Nature at this time of a year, and presented itself to its readers as International Security Studies. Two years later, the springtide of 2015, again, witnessed another beautiful transformation of the journal—the inauguration of the first issue of its English edition.
Security was once famously compared to air, which is hardly perceptible but indispensable to the very sustenance of our lives, and the need of fresh air is certainly deeply felt and understood by the residents in Beijing in the past years. Living on resources in shortage, in an environment in deterioration, in an ecological system in crisis, and in a world in turmoil and disturbance, human beings as a race are in as desperate need of international security as we are of fresh air.
Peace of the world and of one’s motherland is the hope shared by every person in the world, and this is especially the case for the people of China. Without it, China would not be able to develop and prosper as it is today and the “Chinese Dream” of the revitalization of its civilization would also be rendered a “mission impossible.” As President Xi Jinping once said, “As a nation, what we Chinese fear is social unrest, what we wish for is stability and what we aspire after is the peace of the world.”
As it is embarking on its peaceful rise and entering the world stage, China is now faced with unprecedentedly daunting challenges in its security, sovereignty, development, as well as the risks of its interests. Close examination of its global security environment in terms of both theory and practice has been the focus of the academic efforts of scholars in international relations. In a way, full recognition, and recognition of both insight and foresight, of international security, is essential to China if it is to play the role of “a practitioner of peaceful development, a promoter of mutual development, and an upholder of multilateral trade system, and a participator of global economic governance.”
Purporting to stimulate strategic thinking, examine issues in international security, and uphold national interests, the journal is focused on study of the security issues in international relations in three aspects, namely, theory, strategy and related topics. The first aspect mainly touches on concepts, modes, schools, paradigms and methodologies in theoretical security studies. The second aspect focuses on ways, means and strategies for the achievements of security goals and improvement of security environment. And the third aspect covers traditional and non-traditional issues that are representative of the latest development in international security practice.
The journal is targeted at originality and quality of its papers. Your kind contributions will be warmly welcomed and much appreciated.
For the peaceful development of China, and for the peace of the world, let’s make things better.
