120 selected items of everyday use, currently available inShanghai in one way or another, are shown in this book throughphotos and illustrations. The book also includes the interviews ofa dozen craftsmen living in Shanghai, who specialize in bamboo,wood, straw, iron and cloth, in order to portray and share theendeavors of the craftsmen as a whole as well as the intimatedetails of the lives in Shanghai. Hopefully, this book will help tointroduce an idea of environmental friendliness and resourcepreservation to the readers with a love for life, the internationaldesigners looking for novel concepts and the people who care aboutthe development of Shanghai.

這手工活用的都是巧勁
口述：陳師傅，71歲，白鐵匠，浦東新區(qū)新場鎮(zhèn)
我17歲開始學敲鉛皮（白鐵），在廠里跟著老師傅學，平時下班的時候自己也練習練習。后來下崗了，就開始自己接活干了，到現(xiàn)在50多年了喔！
現(xiàn)在每天都要做8小時。做這個其實不是很用力的，敲敲打打都是用巧勁，所以也不算什么體力活，但剛學那會兒手一直敲出血，滿手的橡皮膏。
一般經常做的尺寸都已經在我腦子里了，其他有些比較復雜的，人家有要求的，我就畫下來問他們是不是要這個東西。像澆花桶有6個尺寸，可以根據不同需要來定做。如頭上的這個洞眼小一點少一點，水澆得就遠一點，大一點密一點呢，就可以澆得近，每個定的人要求都不一樣的。
我?guī)н^三個徒弟，不過現(xiàn)在都不做了，嫌這個賺錢慢。
店里做蘿卜絲餅、油墩子用的那個勺賣得最好，5塊錢一個，一天快的話可以做50個，看心情的。
逢年過節(jié)，像桃花節(jié)的時候人多的不得了，外國人也多，我已經做出名氣來了，生意好的不得了，新場就我一家呀，每天有人跟我定東西，賺點功夫錢，吃喝沒問題。

Narrator: Mr. Chen, 71, tinker (Xinchang Town, Pudong)
I began to work on tin at the age of 17 when I apprenticedmyself to a veteran craftsman in the factory and practicedregularly off work. Later, after I was laid off from the factory, Ibegan to take jobs on my own. It is already over 50 years fromtoday!
Now I work 8 hours every day. The work doesn’t require muchstrength; instead, the tinkering needs a lot of clever skills.Therefore, it is not much of heavy manual labor. I kept injuring myfingers in the beginning though, and my hands were wrapped withduct tape all over to stop bleeding.
Some common objects are so frequently produced that theirsizes are already in my mind. As for more complicated objects to becustom-made for customers, I draw a design and ask them if this iswhat they want. For example, a sprinkler kettle can be made in 6sizes based on different needs, and it can produce a long spray ofwater if the holes at the top are made smaller and sparser, orproduce a short spray of water if the holes are made larger anddenser. I can custom-make all these items for the needs of thecustomers.
I was the master of three apprentices, but they are all out ofthis business now, thinking it too slow in making money.
The best-selling item of my shop is the spoon for cookingcarrot cakes and fried buns, at a price of RMB 5. I can make asmany as 50 a day, but it depends on the mood.
During festivals, such as the Peach Blossom Festival, I have agreat number of customers, even foreigners. I have established anexcellent reputation, which brings me good business. My shop is oneof a kind in Xinchang, anyway! People place orders at my shop everyday, and I can easily earn my meals with my skills.
