《新編英美概況（第4版）》主要有以下特點(diǎn)：（1）知識(shí)介紹連貫系統(tǒng)，重點(diǎn)突出，詳略得當(dāng)；（2）語言敘述簡(jiǎn)練準(zhǔn)確，通俗易懂，圖文并茂；（3）各章注釋以提供背景知識(shí)為主，且大多是普通詞典不易查到的內(nèi)容；（4）練習(xí)中的選擇題和填空題為各章知識(shí)重點(diǎn)的濃縮，可用來檢測(cè)學(xué)習(xí)者對(duì)知識(shí)的掌握情況；（5）練習(xí)中的討論題，注重培養(yǎng)學(xué)生分析和解決問題的能力，以及英語表達(dá)能力；（6）章節(jié)編排科學(xué)合理，方便實(shí)用�！缎戮幱⒚栏艣r（第4版）》使用對(duì)象主要是英語專業(yè)大學(xué)生、英語專業(yè)考研生、翻譯碩士考研生、英語自學(xué)考試者、欲出國(guó)留學(xué)者和涉外工作人員。
《新編英美概況（第4版）》1993年首次出版后多次重印，被國(guó)內(nèi)多所院校用做英美概況教材或英語專業(yè)考研參考書。2001年第1次修訂，對(duì)部分章節(jié)內(nèi)容進(jìn)行了精簡(jiǎn)和調(diào)整，增強(qiáng)了該書的實(shí)用性。第2次修訂，主要對(duì)一些知識(shí)內(nèi)容進(jìn)行了更新和增補(bǔ)；美國(guó)和英國(guó)部分分別增補(bǔ)了“宗教”一章，其目的是讓讀者對(duì)世界宗教，特別是英美國(guó)家的宗教信仰狀況有所了解。此次修訂，筆者注意借鑒最新研究成果，合理吸收最新知識(shí)，插入了適當(dāng)圖表，使內(nèi)容具有鮮明的時(shí)代特征。由許魯之主編的本教材2008年被評(píng)為山東省高等學(xué)校優(yōu)秀教材。
