This volume is a collection of Foreign Languages and Culture Series of the IHarbour Lectures, which were initiated to commemorate the establishment of the China West Innovation Harbour (the IHarbour for short). The IHarbour is the new campus of Xi'an Jiaotong University, but it is more than a campus in the traditional sense. Actually,it aims to serve as a premier platform for cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, innovation of science and technology, intemational academic cooperation and intercultural communication. Foreign Languages and Culture Series of the IHarbour Lectures 2019 is an exemplary realization of this goal as it exhibits the latest achievements across the interdisciplinary field of language sciences, explores the incredible power of language in human cognition and behavior, sparks the dialogues between Chinese and Westem literary classics, and accelerates the communication between distinguished scholars from different areas, both academically and geographically. The IHarbour Lecture Series on Language,Culture, and Literature, hosted by the Center for International Studies of Xi'an Jiaotong University, consists of two subseries: (1) Language & Cognition, and (2) Literature & Culture. The lectures in the Language & Cognition subseries,with\"How Language Shapes Us \" as the theme, focus on the intersection between language, cognition and human behaviors. The lectures cover a wide range of critical issues in language science, from the origin of human language to the lexical changes brought about by social media; from the impact of bilingualism on human behaviors to the power of language in constructing country image; from the mechanisms underlying daily communication to the use of language in maintaining justice in the news. The lectures in the Literature & Culture subseries are centered on the theme \"Everlasting Classics\".
In 1956,Jiaotong University was relocated to Xi'an in accordance with the national development plan, and its faculty, staff and the students daringly echoed the call of the central govemment for moving westward from Shanghai to Xi'an,an ancient capital city in Shaanxi Province,to make great contributions selflessly to develop the western region while with the overall situation of the country in mind. Over the past 60 years,Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) has made brilliant achievements on this land. The recent completion of constructing\"Westem China Science and Technology Innovation Harbour\" (IHarbour),the IHarbour campus of XJTU,is tantamount to the second westward relocation of Jiaotong University. The IHarbour campus is located in Fengxi New City,a new development area at the far west end of Xi'an,Shaanxi. It is a national construction program sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Shaanxi Province in order to implement the Belt and Road Initiative,innovation-driven development strategy, and the Great Westem Development strategy. It aims to\"shoulder the national mission, serve as a world highland in science and education, function as an engine driving the development of Shaanxi, play a role as an innovation-driven research platform, and demonstrate as a model of university town\". Now,the IHarbour campus has already taken its shape with magnificent buildings and advanced facilities, wide roads and large parcels of lawns, abundant flowers and trees, and this tranquil natural setting provides a superior environment for academic innovation activities.Such ambitious goals place extremely high demands on the academic development of the IHarbour campus. In addition to regular graduate courses,high-quality academic lectures are also necessary for a high-level university to stimulate academic mnovation. That's why we initiated the series of\"IHarbour Lectures\".When having the whole world in view,we would find that top world-class universities all hold high-level academic lectures. For example,University of Cambridge's \"Darwin Lecture Series\" is held every year in Cambridge's largest lecture hall, packed to full-capacity every time. When Newton was studying in there,\"Lucas Lecture\" was the only series that involved natural science, which led him to the world of natural science research. Oxford University has also set up many lectures series for transnational academic exchanges, such as Wilde Lectureship, which invites world-renowned philosophers to give lectures at the Oxford every year. There are several well-known series of lectures at Stanford University in the United States, such as Robert Wesson Lectures,Gerald Durrell Lecture, and Oksenberg Lecture, etc. Well-known universities like Peking University and Tsinghua University also promote academic development and innovation through various high-quality academic lectures.
