en a Chinese student wants to show appreciation to a foreign teacherwho has been helpful, the Chinese student may wish to buy the foreigner anexpensive gift as a way of thanking him. However, upon receiving the gift, the teacher may appear surprised, thank the student, and politely decline theoffer.
Westerners generally only give gifts on certain occasions such asbirthdays, graduations, weddings or anniversaries, or on holidays such asChristmas or Hanukkah. In general, westerners do not use gifts to incur orrepay social obligations.
It is not generally necessary to reciprocate small personal favors bygiving gifts; usually saying "thank you" is sufficient. In situations wheresomeone does want to show gratitude by offering a gift, westerners are oftencomfortable with being taken out to eat, or with a small gift that has morepersonal significance than monetary value such as a thoughtfully expressedcard. Perishable gifts like food and drink are also considered to beappropriate gifts, particularly if the item is homemade.
Westerners tend to see a fairly clear line between "official". responsibilities andpersonal favors, and feel relatively little obligation to repay people who helpthem in the course of some type of official duty.
