本書初版于1987年，現(xiàn)為1995年修訂版。作者在書中全面考察了翻譯研究的歷史和現(xiàn)狀，提出了將翻譯研究看作一門獨立學科的見解。作者吸收語言學派和文學派翻譯理論的長處，以格式塔整體理論為基礎(chǔ)，倡導翻譯研究的綜合方法。此外，作者還客觀地分析了相關(guān)學科對翻譯研究的影響，并對翻譯理論研究方面的近期趨向作了介紹與歸納。
瑪麗·斯內(nèi)汮－霍恩比借鑒吸收語言學派和文學派翻譯理論各自的優(yōu)勢和長處，提出建立翻譯研究為一門獨立學科的見解，并運用格式整體理論及場景一框架語義學等理論指導倡導翻譯研究的綜合方法。這不僅大大開闊了翻譯研究者的視野，也為我國的翻譯研究提供了可資借鑒的理論依據(jù)，對我國翻譯研究具有一定的指導意義。
瑪麗·斯內(nèi)汮－霍恩比，任教于維也納大學翻譯傳譯學系，長期從事英語、德語翻譯，是歐洲翻譯協(xié)會的創(chuàng)始人之一。
